They are more than entitled to try to make profits any way they see fit.

However.....I simply don't like giclee prints of highwaymen art. Especially at high listing prices.

And listed as "One of a kind", as it stands this morning on eBay, is certainly a misleading headline, especially when it is later identified as # 12 of 30.

Here's the copy/paste : 1 of a Kind Florida Highwaymen GICLEE COLLABORATION Painting Mount Dora FL

Even though the original painting doesn't appeal to my sense of "looks good", I found it to be somewhat interesting because of the manner of production, all these guys in a team effort, and signed by all of them.

I like that, and I like the idea that these originals are raffled off and cost the buyer whatever he or she invested in tickets in a game of chance.

Interestingly enough, I was asked to appraise the last collaboration produced and won the previous year. Or maybe it was this one, I don't recall the details. I simply declined to put a number on it.

I did, however, explain in my email to the person who requested it, how I might go about figuring its value if I had a gun to my head.

My "Do it yourself" guide. Like Home Depot.

See if you think the following makes sense.

Since all the artists are currently aggressively painting and marketing their new work, it's not so tough to start with the size, then find out what each artist prices that particular size for his work.

One would then assume each artist contributed equally, although that may not exactly be the case. Not being in attendance and manning a stop watch, it was impossible to estimate the amount of time and effort expended on an individual basis.

In the case of this particular original (remember, NOT this giclee), eight artists worked on it.

I quote the listing:
"The painting was begun by Roy McLendon... and then completed by the remaining 7 artists, as they added THEIR 'Touch': Next Al Black, then on to Willie Daniels, James Gibson, Issac Knight, R. L. Lewis, John Maynor, and Charles Walker: And of course, then signed by all 8 of the Highwaymen Artists."

Now, I would personally eliminate the highest priced artst and the lowest priced as well, in an attempt to be fair.

Charles Walker is easy to eliminate because he usually paints enormous sizes, for one thing, and prices them to the moon for another. As the lowest priced artist, I would choose Al Black. I mean no disrespect to either one, I'm simply stating that the elimination would even things out a bit.

Then I would add up the six prices and divide by six to get an average. I would then double that value as a "novelty factor".

I will take this opportunity to state that I will not appraise the newer work by any of these artists, as I generally don't deal in them.

the highwaymen movie

Help it happen, people. HOWEVER...both are unusual and very rare.

The first one I originally thought may be an experimental piece by Harold, but in considering everything about it, I'm now speculating that it's possibly the earliest known painting, executed with Backus in his studio at the time of transition from religious work to landscape art. It's an unusual size on upson board, 27x33 in original crown molding painted gray.

H Newton and A Hair Paintings
It doesn't look like H's typical Rio Mar, now, does it? If you happen to be interested in how we know it's authentic beyond a shadow of a doubt, and would be a potential buyer, contact me at hwymnbnb@aol.com or call 727 809 1691. This is a very exciting discovery piece.

This is the second one. It's "wunna them people pictures". Call or email if you want a centerpiece for your collection. There are many reasons why this is more desirable than many of H's dark and dreary people paintings. It's on upson, in an odd size slightly smaller than 18x24, but bigger than 16x20. A great size for you people who claim, "I don't have any wall space".

Go here: http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/H-Newton-and-A-Hair-Paintings/309497962412013

cell 727 809 1691
www.highwaymen-buy-sell-trade.com
www.highwaymenart.blogspot.com
www.highwaymenartappraisal.blogspot.com

https://twitter.com/#!/BobLeBlanc

Vintage highwaymen art

<img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; The ultimate highwayman classic presentation.

It's one of those "rare people pictures" that many of the artists, including Roy are currently reproducing on a regular basis. These new so-called rarities will be addressed in a different posting, as my purpose today is to present a vintage classic Washday painting.

These paintings not only portray the various types of Florida's foliage, but also record history and capture it like a photograph.

Wash day paintings with people are an interesting sub-market of vintage people pictures in general, and as such, they are a little bit more in demand than boathouses or beaches with people. The highest values in this group are enjoyed by Harold Newton and Alfred Hair. As prolific as they were, Old Roy outperformed them both in vintage people pictures.

So, given an equal demand factor for these things, the supply by Roy is much larger, therefore the value lower. That's just how it works.

I've had the pleasure of buying and selling probably a dozen vintage people pictures by Roy including a few wash day paintings. I've seen and examined maybe 50 others.

Roy painted all the different trees to go with the shack, the road, the cottage and the people. Perhaps the most popular, or in demand, wash day paintings include the Royal Poinciana, as that overlaps yet another highwayman art sub market.

Roy would sometimes add one of his classic pine trees or the standard cabbage palms to the left of the road. This one is unique to me with a young mossy oak to the left. Almost all of them have an old mossy oak on the right framing the images with what Fitch called "the reverse 'C'".

It's a neat one, and I wanted to share it.

Highwaymen in Jax 2012

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; This one just won't go away.

People who are new to this highwaymen market usually go to Google, follow the links, see things like this, and have a tendency to believe them.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/250918212430?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

I understand this. It's the result of incorrect information combined with wishful thinking, further interwoven with (quite possibly newfound) pride of ownership.

Yet, when someone calls or emails me wondering if I'm interested in buying their Alfred Hair painting, and I tell them it's a $1500.00 painting, they tell me, "But I see on eBay these are going for $9,000.00."

I only WISH that they were going for $9,000.00.

This simply results in a total waste of time, mine as well as theirs.

I can't really understand what these jerks who list like this are trying to accomplish.

IT'S MIND BOGGLING.

And what in the world is Webber trying to accomplish? He can walk twenty feet next door, to Artlink, and pay full choke retail, and buy a similar one for a third or less of his "professionally appraised" value.

Here's a copy/paste of the listing, as the links don't last forever, even though this has been re-listed several times.

Seller info
Member id 1beachfrontcondo ( Feedback Score Of 11)
100% Positive feedback

November 24 closing Item number 250918212430

Do your homework before buying. I contacted the seller and described the difference, and the seller adjusted the listing to be accurate. It was painted on vintage waffleboard masonite.

That happens to be a rare occurance. I can only remember having seen only one other by Hair painted on this kind of board. So that makes two out of the thousands I've studied in the last decade and a half. It happened to be "jumbo" sized, 30x48 and was a rather plain orange-red river scene, repeated by Hair many times, with one curving cabbage palm leaning out over the water. A formula he executed repeatedly.

What is fascinating to me, however, is that that "jumbo" had an identical signature to this ocean scene. Scratched in on dry paint with "pointy A's" as opposed to the square topped A's that we are used to seeing in his scratch-ins.

Makes me wonder who did it. There must be a story behind it.

ALFRED HAIR and HAROLD NEWTON

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; I guess I should expect it.

SHEER STUPIDITY.

ON EBAY.

Here are some examples such as I have written about in the past.

HAROLD NEWTON

This morning a misty river scene by Harold Newton is offered on EBAY with a starting bid of $12,500.00.
It's 24x48, but it's a scene he painted in every size, repeatedly, probably a thousand times over his four decades of production, mid 1950's to mid 1990's.

Yesterday the same scene, 24x36 (slightly smaller but still couch size) closed after drawing NO BIDS starting at $1,500.00. Does anyone with eyes and a brain see an eleven thousand dollar difference?

Look at the images and compare the two, both masonite, both 80's or 90's, both nice, but unquestionably very common.

ADDITIONAL SEMI-FRAUDULENT INFORMATION ADDED ON WEDNESDAY MORNING.

WHY DOESN'T HE SAY IT'S WORTH $30,000.00 TO $40,000.00?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/270824697294?ssPageName=STRK:MESINDXX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1436.l2649

Here's what the EBAY seller added:

This painting has only been listed for a few hours and already is generating significant interest. Please do not ask about lowering the price or payment arrangements. Thank You. The owners feel the value is more accurately about $18,500. This price is based on its extraordinary beauty and extra large size.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

That $18,500.00 paragraph was a copy/paste from this morning. As of 3:40 p.m., it appears to have been deleted. Go figure.

ALFRED HAIR

I was tempted to write about this last week, but I put it off.

It's pretty much the same situation as above.

These four paintings are identical in size, era, and scene. All are signed, all are genuine.

The colors differ, but all four are extremely similar, desirable, collectible river scenes by the highest profile deceased highwayman.

Two of them drew no interest, or any bids, starting at $1700.00 and $1800.00.

With those results on the public record, the third one was offered with a starting bid of $9,000.00 and backed up by a "Certificate of Appraisal" from a longstanding high profile fine art gallery on Lucerne Avenue in Lake Worth. They proclaimed it to be valued at $10,000.00 to $12,000.00.

The fourth one is starting at $5,000,00. The seller is in Lake Worth, as well.

In this example, I'm not even going to tell you which is which.

You can either guess or go find them on eBay for yourselves. They're right there for the world to see.

Washington D.C. Born in Georgia in 1940 to sharecroppers, Ms. Carroll, who at 70, continues to paint, will meet the First Lady. It is a long way from the days when the mother of seven made a living loading her paintings in her 1964 Buick Electra and travelling throughout the state of Florida to sell her paintings.
The First Lady’s Luncheon is the most prestigious affair of the year by the Congressional Club. In 1912, the Club held a Breakfast, in honor of the wife of the President of the United States. The Breakfast has now become the First Lady's Luncheon and has been held almost every year since its inception.
In addition, Ms. Carroll will be a guest lecturer at Howard University this summer, when the university will host an exhibit of paintings by the Highwaymen.
The history of Florida’s Highwaymen is a story that now is told through a few of the surviving artists who pioneered an incredible and largely unknown National art movement.
The Highwaymen, a group of 26 African-Americans, broke convention to paint beautiful iconic landscapes. Originating in the mid-50s – an era marked by racism, poverty and brutality – the self-taught entrepreneurs mentored each other while they scavenged for basic materials like wallboard for canvasses, and crown molding for frames. Galleries shunned their work, so they peddled their art from car trunks along area roadways, hence their name. Their art freed them from work in citrus groves and created a body of work that has become not only a timeless collection of a natural environment, but a symbol of determination and belief in oneself.
From Sharecropper’s daughter to the White House, 1 of 2

From Sharecropper’s daughter to the White House, 2 of 2
In selling art on the road, Ms. Carroll braved the challenges that came with a Black woman travelling through a segregated south. “I went to Okeechobee,” she recalled of one instance. The guys didn’t go because there was a lot of what you call “redneck” thinking and this kind of stuff. But I was going where I was going and that was it. I traveled up and down the state of Florida by myself. I went over across ditches and canals. And I’m afraid of water.”
“It was segregation. Blacks had one water fountain, whites had another. At restaurants you had to go in the back door. Blacks were disrespected,” she said.
Though she supplemented her income as an artist with a variety of jobs including carpentry and music, the art was her main source of income. “I could not work as a maid and make enough for my family. This was the best life that any of us could live, painting and enjoying the labor. We were able to keep shelter over our heads and feed children and do some of the good things in life.”
The surviving Highwaymen, now in their 70s, are an important chapter in America’s culture and history. Their self-determination in the face of adversity remains a story of perseverance, inspiration and creativity.
Bob Beatty, in his book Florida’s Highwaymen: Legendary Landscapes, writes: “As African Americans in the Jim Crow South, [theirs] is a story of triumph in the face of opposition … [a story] of a loose collective of largely self-taught, self-supporting and self-motivated African American artists rising from obscurity to national renown [and creating] a piece of history…”
Today, Ms. Carroll is pastor of the Foundation Revival Center in Fort Pierce, Fla. You either are or you're not.

One of the things I collect personally is books.

Due to that interest, I carefully monitor that particular segment of the COLLECTOR'S MARKET utilizing the same mindset with which I monitored St. Gaudens twenties and Indian head cents for 25 years and now the HIGHWAYMEN ART MARKET for the last 16.

Since I read "The Stand" and "The Shining" back in the 70's, I have collected the works of Stephen King, like millions of other reader/collectors have. In addition to buying his new fresh books the day they are released, I have invested in several limited specialty issues, and due to their "additional value" as supply/demand collectibles, and I keep a close eye on that market.

Which led me to the following copy paste from The Stephen King Collector site.

I submit it to you, gentle reader (I stole that from King), due to the unmistakable similarities to our highwaymen market.

For this exercise, replace in your mind, if you will, book with art and bookseller with art dealer.
And keep eBay as eBay. Every word he wrote rings true.

As most of you long time collectors know, the SK market hit a peak (price wise) a few years ago. Recently the recession took its toll with more collectors selling off and buyers acquiring less, causing a glut in the market and prices to fall even further then they were. From what I've been seeing, more people have been buying in the last six months or so, which is good. But prices are still lower overall then (sic) back in '02-'03. At the end of the day, collecting anything is discretionary & very dependent on disposable income. Whether it's Art, Coins, or SK books - during an economic downturn collecting takes a hit and in better times surges again. I'm hopeful that we'll look back on this recession as a low point in SK valuations and as the economy picks up so will SK pricing.
The economy has been the most recent game changer, but over the last decade the internet has been the driving change behind the way people collect. And arguably the biggest internet related change has been the buying/selling of books on eBay. Ebay has narrowed the profit margins and forced brick and mortar used bookstores to adapt or close their doors. Betts Books is a perfect example. As a physical location the price difference between Betts and Ebay were too great and business declined to the point where it was not viable. Now as an internet only store the prices have come down substantially and I the business is doing well.
One key thing to point out here is that a bookstore's prices SHOULD be higher than eBay prices. Buying from a trusted bookstore vs. eBay are two very different things. When buying from eBay you have to take your own time out to dig thru listings waiting for the book you want to pop up, then keep on top of the auction status and end times. (I think most of us have played the game where we're up at 5:00am bleary eyed and waiting to put that last bid in to get our book...or we're cursing because we forgot an auction was closing at 2am and missed bidding :) You also have to check for yourself that the item is represented accurately, hope that the seller packages your items safely and in some cases hope that seller with a zero feedback rating or 92% positive feedback rating isn't intentionally trying to screw you over. Essentially you're getting a discounted price because you're taking some of the risk and taking some of your time for the item.
*nb( What he fails to mention is the forged signatures which compare to fake highwaymen)

When you buy from a trusted bookstore you can see if the book you want is in stock and get it right away, or even put a request in for the bookseller to keep an eye out for you on a hard to find book. You know the description will be accurate, the book shipped quickly and safely and if there is a problem during shipping or some other part of the transaction the bookstore will take care of you. Essentially the bookstore has done a good chunk of the work for you and reduced the risk of a bad transaction.
There are exceptions of course, but in general when you look at a books price range you can think of the sold eBay prices at the lower end of the range and bookstore prices at the higher end of the range. Sometimes the two prices are similar sometimes they're further apart, it all depends on the book in question, how often it's available for purchase, and a few other conditions.

True for both markets, many, many other conditions, moreso with art than with books..

Buy highwaymen art, then buy more

<img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; Here is part of a email which they have sent me:

“We have a Harold Newton original which I purchased in the early 1990's from a shop in Indialantic. I bought the painting just moments after it had been put on display. Some of the colors were still damp! They had to delay framing until it had dried for a few days. Harold happened to be at the shop the afternoon that I picked it up.”

If they choose to sell the painting, is this something you would be interested in discussing with them? If so I could pass on your information to them.

Thank you for your time, XYZ

I need to see an image and find out the size.

Hello,
I was able to travel to my in-laws home this weekend and take the following photos of the painting as listed below. Please let me know if you have any trouble receiving these attachments. I know the painting file is large, but I did not want to sacrifice quality by decreasing its size. I am cc’ing ABC and DEF on this email so that you can discuss the painting with them. Thank you very much for taking a look and offering any information you may have.
XYZ

Hi, XYZ. Your images came thru perfectly.

You have many options. They all involve a measure of trust.

You can advertise it in the classifieds and draw vultures, collectors who are really dealers, who'll bring you low-ball offers.

You can find someone local to sell it on eBay for you.
There will be some kind of fee involved from both the seller and eBay.

You can find a Florida auction house that appeals to you. Generally they charge a buyer's fee as well as a seller's fee so you'll end up with a return of essentially 60-70 percent of its liquid market value. There also may be cataloguing or handling fees as well.

You can pick a specialist dealer or gallery that appeals to you via private meeting or internet and sell it outright for a check. This will return you 100% of its liquid market value immediately.

You can consign it to a specialist dealer of your choice to sell for you at retail and allow a 10 or 20% commission fee that service. This should return you 110-120% of its liquid value.

To make an intelligent decision on these options, you need an idea of its market value in more detail than Harold Newton's current liquid value range of $400.00 to $15,000.00.

I offer an appraisal service which has been useful to novices, collectors, dealers, eBay sellers and museums for the last 10 years. I have explained and re-explained how it works in my appraisal blog, and have had an article published by a leading Florida art and antiques periodical specifically detailing how I look at the Harold Newton market and place values on the paintings.

My interest has always been focused on the commerce that occurs due to his many paintings changing hands on a regular basis. Thus I am qualified to appraise these things with honest, real time information.

Since I believe this information has value, I charge a flat fee of $100.00 per painting. Some people think that's fair, others don't, and the sun will come up tomorrow either way.

If your painting had little or no value, I would not charge a fee, I'd just inform you, expecting only a simple word of thanks.

Your painting has value, and has a bonus of being very beautiful, thus more desirable than many.

I do not make offers, as that would constitute a free appraisal.

My appraisal includes a certificate of authenticity and I inform you of all of the different values as defined in your options.

Regardless of your decision, I appreciate the opportunity to appraise and possibly handle this piece.

regards, BOB

Not a highwayman, but..........

I spent most of my creativity on my other blog, highwaymenart.blogspot..com, and I feel like I've been neglecting this one, so I'm going to re-post something here.

It's a copy/paste from last year. Since that time, I've sold a bunch of them, but I have also bought quite a few new ones. You CANNOT buy the one hanging in my dining room. In fact, you can't even have a look at it.

Here you go. PAY ATTENTION. You'll be glad you did in a few years.

D L Rust, listed Florida artist
As many of you know, and as it has been reported in various antique / art publications, I buy, display and sell oil paintings of Florida wildlife by listed artist D L Rust.Of particular interest, both to me and the public, are his gator paintings. His paintings are so realistic that this actually happened to one of my customers.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCsRpfOzqn0&NR=1
I must have sold fifty of them over the years since my first trip to visit Rust in his studio.
I love his work and I am pleased to offer 6 or 7 pieces currently in stock. Some are posted on the main website, http://www.highwaymen-buy-sell-trade.com/.Look in my Other Florida Artists page.
These are offered with an asking price of $ 375.00, discounts available on multiple purchases. The current sizes I have are all oils on stretched canvas, 20 x 24, a nice manageable size.
I dislike writing negative things of any sort, but these are not giclee prints, as one ignorant spiteful Fort Pierce "highwaymen" seller claims they are. They are original oils on stretched canvas.
D L Rust has a painting in the National Gallery in the Smithsonian. If his work is good enough for them, gentle readers, perhaps it is good enough for you ?
Especially at these reduced prices.
Just for fun and comparison purposes, here's a link to an eBay offering of similar work by another listed artist C. Ford Riley. The fact that the opening bid is posted as $ 9,995.00 is irrelevant.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Large-Florida-Gator-Watercolor-C-Ford-Riley-Signed-/120621702285?pt=Art_Paintings&hash=item1c159d1c8d

Update 02/24/11. Listing is now deleted. Link is dead. Sorry. It was a nice painting.

Riley's listed auction record in AskArt.com is $ 650.00.
Rust's auction record in AskArt.com is $ 4,183.00.
I rest my case.

Highwaymen show in Jax

February 12, 2011. It attracted attention, certainly, as would any original "fast painting" by such a famous deceased artist as Alfred Hair. It did not attract any bids, however.

And, what the hell, as long as I'm picking on this attempted transaction, despite the fact that Gary Monroy sold all those books titled " Harold Newton, the Original Highwayman", and despite the fact that Antiques and Art Around Florida published my article on the discovery of a painting by Newton and titled it (for me) "The Original Highwayman's Self Portrait Discovered and Sold", and despite the fact that Harold Newton met and worked with Backus before Hair was introduced to the old Beanster, this seller "enhanced" his listing by trumping all that and deciding that Alfred Hair was "the original highwayman".

Sheesh. How did THAT work out for him ?

The seller went fishing, but caught nothing. Ebay made money. End of story.

highwaymen art summary 2010

I'm feeling lazy and I need a few days off. Looks like a hurricane.

True to life, hurricanes are not especially colorful.

Howevah......................The style and colors and the frame he used confirms a later work.

So when Geraghty tells you it's EARLY, do not think it was painted in the 50's or 60's, but possibly in the late 70's, although it looks newer to me. 80's or 90's.

I wasn't there when Harold painted it, so I don't know for sure.
But I HAVE been studying his work for the last 15 years.

I DO believe he priced it fairly, and that's what matters in the end.

Another caveat emptor for your interpretation of eBay descriptions.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Highwaymen-Painting-Harold-Newton-highwaymen-ocean-/260709228765?pt=Art_Paintings&hash=item3cb37b20dd

H Newton appraisal policy chapter 5 or 6

Maybe this spells it out more clearly than in previous posts ?
You be the judge.

email received and responded to this morning.

Greetings,

I have a painting by H Newton that my dad gave me years ago. He acquired it when he lived in Palm Bay, Fl. It is approximately 18 by 22 and it is in great shape. I have attached some pics. Would you be a buyer? If not, can you direct me to an interested party?

Thank you kindly,

Ed, this is how I do it.

I can appraise paintings by use of images from emails in most cases. Yours are excellent.
I have a pretty good handle on which artists' works exist as prints or giclees, having studied this market since its birth 15 years ago.

**********************************

Each highwaymen artist has his own market, with values depending on a multitude of factors, most obviously the scene itself, elements within it, and size.

And although every painting is unique, there exists a lot of repetition.

There are several prices or values for each piece based on many factors.

A liquid price, which means I write a check to you and we're done.
If you choose this option, I return the appraisal fees. This requires physical inspection.
A fair wholesale asking price which is a little higher than what I would pay .
A fair retail price, higher still. What I would expect the market to bear.
What you could expect at auction minus commissions.
And the high retail insurance value I use for the certificates.

Upon payment, I give you these numbers and create the certificates.

There are willing buyers at fair wholesale. Fortunately I know a few.
Retail buyers are more difficult to find. And they are both fickle and picky.
However, there are probably a hundred buyers out there for something with the Harold Newton signature due to his fame on a national level and due to the promotion of getting him listed in various art references.
The two books about him don't hurt, either.

****************************************
My specialized knowledge has value.

I found out many years ago that if I give a free appraisal, I'll usually see the painting on eBay within a week and not even get a word of thanks.

Having a keen sense of the obvious, I found that annoying.
So, I adjusted my thinking.

I charge a flat fee of $ 100.00 per painting for appraisals which include a certificate of authenticity, an example of which is on the first website below.

This is a fraction of what you can pay for an appraisal by someone who is accredited by some group with initials, but unfamiliar with the market itself.

More detailed info on how I appraise things can be found in this newspaper article.

http://www.antiqueshoppefl.com/articles/sept10/newton0910.htm

Some people think I'm fair, some don't.

regards and happy holidays.

BOB

**************************************************

As an addendum, at least I got a fair response, as I'm posting below.

Free appraisals are worth what you pay for them. That's what offers really are.
I have no use for internet bidding wars.

I also believe that passing his information on to others has value.
So, I guess I'll have to turn that request down.

Bob,

Thanks for the reply. I am not in a position to pay money, I need money. That is why I am willing to part with the painting. If you are willing to make me an offer, I am all ears. If not, please pass my information on to others.

Thank you for your time.

Investment quality highwaymen art

There is highwaymen art.......................

and there is investment quality highwaymen art.

If you can't tell the difference, call me. Eventually this will trickle down to our little market, regional Florida art, and sales will perk up. This will push prices back upward, which will wake up the sheep, and they will invest more causing more price increases. The cycle will trend upwards again.

When will that happen ? When ?

Gain some confidence, people. Buy a damn Harold Newton.
You'll be glad you did. But don't just buy what I call "an autograph", a plain blah one. You gotta step up to the plate and buy a NICE one.

Here's the article:

By Marilyn Bauer
TCPalm
Posted November 18, 2010 at 12:08 p.m
As the first of the fall auctions in impressionist, contemporary and modern art commenced in New York, a group of about 20 Treasure Coast investors met at the Elliott Museum in Stuart for an educational presentation on entering what has proved to be a rapidly recovering art market.
With only weeks until the start of Art Basel Miami Beach — the famed international contemporary art show — the presentation by highly credentialed art consultant E. Sarah Paul registered as perfect timing. Paul will be back in town to give advice on what's hot and what's not just a few days before Art Basel begins, as a guest of UBS Financial Services, sponsors of the art as investment presentation.
"It's not unlike what The Lyric Theatre does when they bring an artist to town and have them do a program in the schools," said Craig D. Price, senior vice president with UBS. "I would like to emulate that model."
Price charmed the mostly female audience with his assessment on why to buy art now: "The government is pumping money into the economy in the hopes of stimulating inflation," Price said. "An asset that benefits from inflation is art, as well as gold and silver."
In other words, art is a great place to park one's wealth while waiting out the recession. (emphasis is mine, don't want you to miss it)
The art market has soared 39 percent in volume over last year, according to the Wall Street Journal. In addition, the New York auctions, which have not finished as of the writing of this column, are expected to sell 2,266 works equaling $1 billion.
The market increase has to do with significant de-accessioning of works by important collectors and newly minted millions from the BRIC countries (Brazil, Rio, India, China) interested in buying art at the New York auctions, thus inflating prices.
Paul, the 32-year-old founder of the developing website artcaste.com, is a well-educated innovator with experience in building important collections. She provided information for every level of collector, stressing research and legwork before making a purchase.
UBS took Paul's show to the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach with plans to continue the invitation-only lunches through April.
Price is a class act dedicated to community building and enthusiastically promotes culture as a way of improving our standard of living.
"The idea for the luncheon was to give those who were collecting art in our community the chance to hear from an expert and to solidify a deeper connection to the arts locally," Price said.
Price sees great opportunity for collectors right here at home suggesting the work of landscape painter Cristina de la Vega, who was honored by the state, as a place to start.
Marilyn Bauer is a columnist for Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers. Worried.

Now this is a sort of brainwashing on a subconcious level and one of the reasons I put so much blame on the media for helping to sustain this pathetic economy.

This guy pictured is every small business owner and by God, he's WORRIED.

America, you too better be worried. That's the message, no question.

I see this picture and the Travelers Insurance (the one with an umbrella) advertisment that I see on television all the time runs in my head. The one where the cute little white terrier frets about where to secure his bone for a rainy day. In the background is this great blues song that goes. "Trouble, Oh, trouble, trouble...been dogging me since the day I was born. Worry. Oh, worry, worry, worry...". You must have seen it, I've seen it about a million times. Very effective.

This one : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5G7bGBUlx2M

That's the little AOL guy for ya way up top. The paintings of the Highwaymen are now considered to be an important sector of American Art. Perhaps the art of the Highwaymen can best be de- scribed as a marriage of rich arresting color and stark simplicity of form. If the viewer lets his or her imagination soar, the effect is almost hypnotic—these scenes appear to be embedded in time. For many individuals it’s a trip down memory lane, evoking fond recollections of grow- ing up in Florida. For the neophytes, these paintings offer a look into a culture with storybook appeal. For the urbanites, the “trendy” aspect is proving irresistible, and for still others, they provide a visual foray into the lush Florida landscape. Whatever the individual fascination, the born-again popularity of the Highwaymen has collectors strongly intrigued...and vying with each other to supplement their collections.

alfred hair appraisal

Here's a classic from Alfred Hair, 24 x 48 upson of course, pristine condition with original crown molding frame. I appraised this one for an estate about 6 months ago.

I've had a few of these golden sunrise seascapes, 48 and 36 inchers, mostly he did the longer ones. There's one of these in the Fitch traveling highwaymen display thing he's got going. Or there used to be.

Anyway, these are classics. Enjoy the pic.

Fake Livingston Roberts on eBay

Be careful out there.
This link, while it lasts, takes you to a L Roberts fake or mis-attribution on eBay 10/23/10.

http://cgi.ebay.com/HighWayMen-L-Roberts-Vintage-Swamp-Landscape-/170555564910?pt=Art_Paintings&hash=item27b5e7636e

Well here we go, boys and girls. I understand how this can happen, but.........
here's what the seller writes in his description : (copy/paste)

After much research the Highwaymen signed their work in many formats / ways depending on what they had and could afford for tools and paint at that time.
I personally cannot portray that this is one of Livingston Roberts earlier pieces- but it does carry the ambience of one through his style, technique and vivid colors.
All of Livingston Roberts paintings of Florida landscapes are painted in oils on Upson board or Masonite. He signed each work in a way unusual for many Highwaymen –
******by scratching "L. Roberts" into the wet paint with a PALETTE knife.******

First he states that Roberts always scratched in the signature. Then he shows a nice close-up of a painted-on signature. Go figure.

L Roberts sometimes painted on his signature, so this seller/researcher's first premise was incorrect to begin with. Although signed L Roberts, the signature was not done by "highwayman" L Roberts, maybe it was done by Leo Roberts or Lenora Roberts or Lucy Roberts, an amateur grandmotherly hobbyist/painter.

The signature is wrong, one indication is that Livingston used a lower case "b", as in L, RObERTS" when he signed. Don't know why, but he did.

I might as well mention that the style is wrong, the technique is wrong and Livingston painted on canvases and canvasboards as well as upson and masonite.

The most obvious difference between this painting and a genuine L Roberts painting is the talent level portrayed by the finished product. Livingston was talented.

This L Roberts, whoever it may be, ain't what you could call "talented".

Or maybe someone just added the signature for fun and possible profit, although that would be against the law, so that certainly wouldn't happen, eh ?

Be careful out there.

Appraise and evaluate highwaymen paintings

Well, here's how you get a stronger google presence, I'd have to guess.
Seems to have worked for THEM, let's see if it works for me.

This is copy/pasted from another site with only the names changed to protect the guilty.

GUILTY OF WHAT ? Willie and Johnnie Daniels. Sam and Harold Newton.

If I am personally unsure, I'll simply reach out to Geoff Cook or various experienced collectors whose knowledge and experience within the genre I respect.

That said, I have been seeing more and more Certificates being used as sales tools in auctions such as eBay and Craig's List, etc.

Here are the two latest examples, while they last, for you to peruse.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Highwaymen-Painting-McLendon-Unsigned-w-Cert-Auth-/220673594868?pt=Art_Paintings&hash=item33612bd5f4

The orange fire sky McLendon, to me, is a "no-brainer". I've certainly seen and studied over a hundred similar pieces and in fact used one for a calendar page in the (now rare) 2004 Highwaymen Calendar.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Highwaymen-Painting-W-Daniels-Unsigned-w-Cert-Auth-/220673594872?pt=Art_Paintings&hash=item33612bd5f8

The yellow one is more difficult and could possibly be McLendon as well.

On the money side of these Certificates, knowing their true liquid market value as well as how much one should insure these works of art for, well, that couldn't hurt.

highwaymen appraisal policy

Here are the nuts and bolts of the process.

As an example, here is an email I received and my response today.

Good afternoon Bob,

I hope this finds you doing well!

Thanks so much for responding. I am not sure how this process works. What is the process once I submit the photo of the painting? Is there a fee?

Thanks so much in advance!!

Wishing you a great day!!

Customer X

Hello, Customer X,

There is a fee of $ 100.00 to appraise your painting and issue one of my certificates.

Here is an example : http://128.121.177.59/CERTIFICATE%20OF%20AUTHENTICITY.htm

The value I place on these is for insurance purposes, based upon current "replacement" cost for a similar painting by the same artist. I also inform you of its current liquid value, which generally is approximately half of the appraised value.

If you have a painting that I can use in inventory and you wish to sell it to me, I will refund your fee when we agree to a purchase/sale agreement.

In that case, I would need to physically inspect it or arrange for a trusted associate from your area to do so on my behalf.

If you think that's fair, we can proceed and I will give you my mailing address.

I accept payment only by personal checks or cash, and occasionally Paypal, although I prefer not to.

Please let me know.

regards

BOB

highwaymen art appraisal policy

I charge a simple flat fee of $ 100.00 per painting.

For larger collections, I always offer a discount.

In most cases, I can create them with images sent by email.

There are exceptions, of course, because prints are known to exist for several of the artists, including Sam Newton, Livingston Roberts, Charles Walker and R L Lewis.

An internet hignwaymen "highjacker" has captured images from various websites and created prints of Harold Newton's work and is offering for sale mousepads and clocks featuring them.

Because of such practices , this is my official disclaimer:

I may need to physically inspect the paintings which is always preferable in any case.

You can get free appraisals in many places by many people. They may or may not be accurate regardless of the so-called credentials and societies they may have paid a fee to belong too. No matter how high-profile these appraisers may appear, very few would be accurate if you showed them a Roy McLendon painting with a shack and some people on canvas, and a similar scene on upson board.

Other appraisers may or may not wish to buy your painting which could influence their evaluation.

I am willing to buy, sell, trade and authenticate and appraise. If your painting is for sale it will not lower my evaluation.

My services have been used by other dealers, museums and the retail public.
References are available.

Buying depends on many factors, especially whether or not I like your painting as an easily salable property. Having sold thousands of highwaymen paintings over the last decade and a half, I know which ones are easy or difficult to sell.

That helps me to appraise their value realistically. The liquidity factor, let's call it.

As an example, here's a recent email I sent a potential customer: copy/paste

Hi, each artist has his own market.
And although every painting is unique, there exists a lot of repetition.

There are several prices for each piece based on scene desirability by the public.
Consumer demand has been watched closely for the last 15 years.

A liquid price, which means I write a check to you and we're done.
If you choose this option, I return the appraisal fees.
A fair wholesale asking price which is a little higher than what I would pay.

And they are picky.

BOB

Florida highwaymen art appraisals

Welcome.

If you need to know the value of a highwayman painting, we can help.

First of all, the artist must be on the official list of highwaymen artists who were inducted into the Florida Artists' Hall of Fame in Tallahassee, maintained by the Division for Cultural Affairs.

However, their information is currently inaccurate, as of August 17, 2010.

Here is a copy/paste of the email I sent to the Administrator today:

********************************************************************
kcrawford@dos.state.fl.us

Dear Mr Crawford:

In the interest of accuracy, I thought you would be interested in updating the Florida Artists Hall of Fame web page regarding Alfred Hair and the Highwaymen.

Since their induction in 2004, the last 6 years have seen 3 more additions to the deceased list.

I also see that there is some incomplete information regarding various birth dates, etc.

Please accept this information with my compliments.
